Demisch Danant Hosts Jos Devriendt's First Solo Show
The Belgian talent exhibits his playful forms in New York

This week, New York design gallery Demisch Danant opens the highly anticipated exhibition "I am I" by Belgian artist and designer Jos Devriendt. The show, which marks Devriendt's first solo NYC exhibition, presents more than 90 lamps, vessels, and objects Devriendt crafted by hand. This exhibition carries on the gallery's exploration of postwar and contemporary European design.

"I am I" features works that are part of Devriendt's continuing "Night and Day" series, which examines how time and atmosphere can transform how we perceive an object. He works with a mushroomlike porcelain form that, in the daytime, is illuminated by natural light filtering through the material, and at night becomes illuminated by LED bulbs. "Because the light comes from outside during the day, and from inside at night, the impression of the sculpture appears totally different," he tells AD. "They're 24-hour objects." The change in light source alters the form, color, and scale of the lamp in a drastic manner.
