Details of a Private Collection

September 16, 2010

A true collection (of whatever really) tells many stories. Of course, the history and aesthetic integrity of each individual piece is one obvious story, but how the pieces come together - to live together - is what ultimately reveals the most intriquing one, the story of the collector himself. And over time (in other words, through connoisseurship), a unique vocabulary begins to develop between the pieces, the environment which houses them and the collector, becoming more distinguishable as the collection grows and evolves. The collection becomes a kind of self-portrait of the collector, and always unintentionally when in its purest form.
