New York, NY...Demisch Danant gallery is pleased to announce the Design Miami/Basel 2012 presentation of Maria Pergay as part of a year-long series of milestone events celebrating the legendary designer’s 55 years of creation. In March Pergay’s work was highlighted with a special exhibition in Paris, “Maria Pergay: Place des Vosges,” representing all the decades of her career to the present. Continuing the celebration, the Design Miami/Basel presentation will bring together a more focused selection of works in an atmosphere evoking the 1970s.

Pergay’s clientele is international, with institutions and individuals alike drawn to her work’s distinctive combination of precision and expression, radicality and tradition, refinement and fantasy. With works spanning from the 1960s to today, the Design Miami/Basel exhibition will showcase exceptional examples of furniture and lighting that reveal the aesthetic and technical potentials of stainless steel, Pergay’s favored material. The Pergay celebration will continue with an exhibition in New York in November 2012 featuring lighting and mirrors in bronze.

About the Designer
Born in Romania to Russian parents, Maria Pergay arrived in Paris in 1937 as a six year-old émigré. Having studied costume and set design at the Institute des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques, and having attended sculpture classes in Montparnasse, she made her first forays into design creating retail window displays in the late 1950s. Pergay has become identified in particular for her sophisticated stainless steel designs. Her first collection in the material included such iconic objects as the Flying Carpet Daybed (1968) and the Ring Chair (1968), inspired by the spiraling form of a single strip of orange peel. These works will both be on view as part of the Design/Miami Basel presentation.

Exhibition Info
Maria Pergay at Design Miami/Basel will be on view from June 12-17, 2012, with a press preview taking place on June 11 from 3-6pm. This exhibition was organized by Demisch Danant, and is the gallery’s seventh presentation at Design Miami/Basel.
